book lover, professional writer & blogger
“So, you’re a writer?”
“Yes I am!”
“You gonna be the next Harry Potter?”
Other than cringe all I usually manage is, “I doubt that – he’s a made-up child wizard.”
If I had a coin for every time I’ve been asked that incredibly insightful question, I’d be bumping into J. K. Rowling on the rich list. Doesn’t matter how hard you try to think of something completely unique to write or talk about – or at least something with a bit of edge – some people are just looking for the next big thing.
There are Potter freaks everywhere.
As much as I respect J. K. Rowling as a writer, I have a proud confession: I have never opened a single one of the books or seen a film from the franchise. Seriously. It might seem a little cruel to say I’m pleased about my choice but, I am. I’m something of a book reading rebel. I like to think I’m not swayed by the mainstream hype. I’m also not that desperate to read about a public schoolboy waving a magic wand at witches or floating around on a walking stick playing an airborne version of cricket. There, I said it.
So, for now, I’m content to remain alone in a Harry-less world, a no Hermione zone, an anti-Ronald Weasley paradise.
Is there anyone else out there living the Potter-free dream?
I’d love to hear from you, although I might die of shock if I do.
